Ship # 956
Educational Night Sail Excercise
Mon 03-Apr-2006
Purpose:
- Emphasize the need to sail into or away from the wind.
- Emphasize sail handling as course changes
- Allow practice in close quarter helm operations
Plan:
Allow two (2) person teams (with an advisor) to gain experience sailing a boat through a
series of marks. Obviously the goal is to not hit any marks.
Procedure:
Most of the crew will embark on Loree Ann. The first team will embark on Mongoose with the advisor. Katie Bar Three will set three (3) marks approximately 100 yards apart staggering them 100 ft. off a centerline perpendicular to the wind.
- Teams will sail a zig-zag course along a basically a beam reach through the buoys
- Teams will then turn around the final mark (not hitting it) and run the return course along the centerline of the marks.
- Team will repeat the course after trading positions
- Mongoose will sail a straight and steady course, slowing to allow Loree Ann to approach under sail
- Teams will be traded and the procedure repeated until all teams have done the course at least once.
