Chartering the 50' Beneteau "Sea Lyon"
out of Ft. Lauderdale, Ship 956 embarked upon
an adventure across the Gulf Stream from
June 17th to June 24th, 2000.

By Emely Baruque

Bahamas Cruise 2000 occurred from June 17th to the 24th. It was a great adventure not only for the seven youth
that participated but also for the four adults leading it. We not only had fun but we also learned about sailing,
coral reefs, different kinds of fish, about ourselves and how to make a team work.

On Saturday June the 17th, sailing from Ft. Lauderdale in a 50-ft sailboat called "Sea Lyon", the group started what would
be a great adventure. From Ft. Lauderdale we headed south to the Keys and on Sunday morning we got to Carysfort Reef,
Key Largo (part of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park) and did some snorkeling. We had fun, learned about reefs, the
lighthouse and fish; also we noticed that the reef is unfortunately dying
(of algae blight).

By Tuesday we got to Bimini, Bahamas and enjoyed a relaxing evening. Wednesday we went to Hotel Rocks, a couple of
rocks in the middle of the waters off of Bimini, we snorkeled and saw amazingly colored fish, a nurse shark, and other really
interesting animals. Thursday we went to "The Sapona," a concrete ship that got sunk in a storm and is very close to Bimini.
We snorkeled some more and also used some adrenaline by jumping from the deck and bow of the ship. That night we all
went dancing, learned some new steps and enjoyed seeing each one of us dancing Bahamas music.

Friday we headed back to Ft. Lauderdale. Our great adventure was coming to an end. We all wrote in the Ship's Log, we
all took pictures, we all said things, but the best thing was that we had been together for an entire week in a boat working
together, being the crew of a great captain, and having fun and supporting each other. Friday night we all headed to our
houses happy to return, but at the same time very sad that this was over. From all the things of the trip the best thing
was the crew; we became friends and at the same time team-workers. It was amazing how the seven youth and the four
adults made one of the best crews and how everything worked out.

Karla and others enjoying a little "boom diving" — not for the wobbly or faint-hearted. We were anchored near "Hotel Rocks", on the north end of North Bimini. Fantastic snorkeling there.

The "Sapona". Wrecked in a hurricane near Bimini in the twenties, the concrete-hulled "Sapona" was a liquor smuggling ship during Prohibition. Now a famed dive & snorkeling site.
