Sea Scout Ship # 956

Educational Night Sail

17-April-2006

Before leaving the dock:

1.)

a.) Determine there are sufficient PFD’s aboard for all crew.

       # of Crew:________         # of PFD’s: ________

2.)

a.) Verify that all navigational lights are functional.

              Yes:___           No:___

3.)

a.) Determine the proper sail configuration for the evenings conditions

Set Sail!

1.) Helmsman will point the boat directly into the wind and hold while another crew calls

     out the compass reading.

a.) Determine the Direction of the wind: ________ º’s

b.) Use Compass Designations to name this angle:_____

Ex. (N, S, E, W, NW, SE, WNW etc…)

2.) The helmsman will sail the boat up-wind in a close-hauled state on both port and

starboard tacks holding each long enough for another crew to call out the compass

     reading.

a.) Determine the angles this boat will sail upwind while close-hauled:

Port Tack:________ º’s,  Starboard Tack:________ º’s

b.) Use Compass Designations to name these angles:

                 Port Tack:________,  Starboard Tack:________

2.25) Adding and Subtracting 45 º’s from the wind’s direction will yield the theoretical

angles a sailing vessel may point while close-hauled.

a.) Determine the theoretical angles a sailing vessel may point while close-hauled:

Port Tack:________ º’s,  Starboard Tack:________ º’s

b.) Use Compass Designations to name these angles:

                 Port Tack:________,  Starboard Tack:________

2.5) Determine the difference in theoretical and actual degrees.

Port Tack:________ º’s,  Starboard Tack:________ º’s

2.75) Give possible reasons these answers differ.

______________________________________________________________________________

3.) The helmsman will sail the boat on a beam reach, both port and starboard tacks,

holding each while another crew calls out the compass readings.

a.) Determine the angles of the two beam reaches for this boat:

Port Tack:________ º’s,  Starboard Tack:________ º’s

b.) Label these using Compass Designations:

                 Port Tack:________,  Starboard Tack:________

3.5) Adding and Subtracting 90 º’s from the wind’s direction will yield the angles of a beam

     reach for current conditions.

a.) Determine the theoretical angles of the two beam reaches for this wind direction:

Port Tack:________ º’s,  Starboard Tack:________ º’s

b.) Label these using Compass Designations:

                 Port Tack:________,  Starboard Tack:________
